Does God punish Christians?

I think it depends on your definition of punishment.

I don't think that he hurts us as retribution but I believe he often causes "negative" things to happen to us that help us realize that we have strayed outside of his will.

I agree. I've read some things and I think this is what they said,

God's punishment is for those who have rejected His Son, but His discipline is only for Christians,

"Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father? If you are not disciplined (and everyone undergoes discipline), then you are illegitimate children and not true sons." Heb. 12:7-8

The purpose of punishment is get non-Christians to realize their need for God and discipline is to purify our actions and keep us from being in the flesh.

"No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it."
-Heb. 12:11

Sorry for the lengthy post, but I just rememebered the stuff I've heard about it.
